I have stiffly refused and rolled my eyes when my roommate urges me to "branch out" and care for leafy (or furry) creatures.
So it came as a cruel irony when at the beginning of this year I was given two plants (I'll admit, one was offered and I decided to accept it out of simple curiousity). After a brief period of adjustment where the bambooish-spidery plant was constantly on death's door, I sought professional friend help and learned two important facts about plants:
-if you're going to error one way, give the plant too little water--not more!
-not all plants can handle direct sun light.
Anyway, I named the plants--Fred and Fred--vague names of personal detachment and referred to them as "Fred squared."
Somehow the plants and I survived the year (sometimes I'd wait until Fred #1's leaves were completely drooping, and then water it to see the leaves spring back up again 8 hours later... :) toward the end of the year i finally stopped that...mostly...).
However, now that I'm leaving for Italy, I had to give Fred Squared away, to a good home with a nice lady who loves plants. I started to walk them over to her place on Saturday and was frustratingly disturbed to find regret wiggling like a catepillar around my heart. I CANNOT BE ATTACHED TO PLANTS!!
Plants do not have feelings. Plants depend on you for survival. Plants never ask for anything except a little bit of attention 2-3 days, but don't complain too loudly if you chose not to deliver that attention. But overall, I REFUSE TO HAVE SENTIMENTAL FEELINGS FOR GREEN LEAFY THINGS!!
Then I realized maybe it's not just the plants. Maybe it's the fact that I've spent 3.5 years of my life here at this green leafy college, making fantastic friends, learning to love this small college in Nebraska. And I leave in 6 days. And I don't know when I'll ever come back. If I'll ever come back.
...So I might go a little emo for awhile....

Awwwwww - leaving college sucks. At least I can postpone that feeling for another 2 years...
I don't know of any solution to the dilemma either. Sad sad sad.
Can't say I've been growing any cute green plants, but there's a growing stash of rubbish in the corner of our room :P
lol, you ordering wheatbix bars over the internet to your room for college breaks again? :)
yeah, i'm startin to freak out again. it just dawned on me how much stuff i need to sort through and pack tonight. ugh....thanks for the sympathy!
Well not quite, but I'm getting mum to send a few packs up from my stash :)
I suppose I need to start packing quite soon, but finals are the true priority at the moment. 3 days of doom and calamity ahead - then I'm free!
good luck on the finals, brandon!! keep breathing...
