President Obama...America All Better

Ok, this is something that I've got to get off my chest, and it's been bothering me for the last four months. Two things have encouraged me to finally write about it now: a conference I went to and an improv show I attended in Chicago.

When President Obama was finally sworn in on that historic day in January, I was a little offended. Every channel championed Martin Luther King Jr. and emphasized over and over again how far the United States has gone to elect a black president.

Honestly, I'd forgotten he was black. I was celebrating how far the United States has gone since 2001, and 2004.

I'm all for equal rights. And let's face it, politicians only alienate themselves by not demographically representing who the rest of us are. But I didn't vote for Obama because he is black and I'm offended by people who assume many people did. I voted for Obama, because I believe he can change things, or at least he's going to darn well try. Because I want a politician paid for by the people, not the global corporate giants. Because I want the United States to stand for integrity again, not flagged terrorism. I voted for President Obama because I cared about his stance on issues. Not because I cared about his skin color.

Conference:
"Whenever anyone over 30 yrs. sees President Obama they see a black president. Anyone under 30 yrs. just sees an American."

Chicago Improv night showed "America All Better." Definitely worth checking out.
