the state of the union address

So I'm listening and watching the president's state of the union address.

Some things that are disturbing:
1) Bush talks about the possiblity of huge tax hikes because of baby boomers retiring in the next couple years, right after he announces "tax breaks" that he "urges" congress to make "permanent." If caring for the new retirees is going to cost 60% of the federal buget as Bush mentioned, why should we offer small "tax breaks" now, when we could put that money into a large fund to take care of the retirees?

2) It's unnerving the amount of time Bush gets standing ovations. Sometimes from the Democrats, sometimes from the Republicans, sometimes from both. They're probably terrified they'll get on the FBI's special watch list if they don't stand in show support every three minutes.

3) Tonight, it very much sounds like Bush wants the U.S. to embrace a crusade policy. He declared the U.S. should help several countries including Iran gain "freedom." "Liberty" like the one we find in Iraq now? Most of the people there hate us. We march in with no understanding of their culture and become targets for ignited people. "Liberty" like the kind we have in the United States? Bush claims he has the executive power and can do illegal phone tapping on his own people. Politicians that disagree with the war in Iraq are considered "unpatriotic" or are simply doing unproductive complaining.

4) Bush is convinced that democracy is THE only way any government should rule. But can a democratic government become so controlling with trying to protect itself that it eventually becomes a bureautic dictatorship? Can it become so headstrong in defense that it becomes the very thing it thought it was fighting?

Of course it's just my idealistic hope, but I don't believe our government is beyond saving. It is however, in desperate need of reform.

Will Democrats do better? I'm not exactly hopeful there either. Seriously the guy who said the Democratic Response to the president's speech CANNOT keep his left eyebrow down while he talks. And his speech did not give solid solutions for Iraq. Or many other solutions. Pretty words and small examples between the phrase of "there's a better way!" What Democratic politicians don't realize, is that the numerous politician bribery scandals didn't just point to Republicans, but Democrats too. To regular every day people: they're all crooks.

Right now would be a great time for a new political party to emerge. Hopefully it's not too extreme.

Are you suggesting the american version of Hamas begin a political party??

Hey, if they can wipe out corruption in palestine, there might be a hope here!!

I found it... hmm... I guess amusing... that Bush also said about America needing to cut its addiction to oil, and not rely on oil from the Middle East.

Ironic, considering that he's really involved in sucking up to oil companies, trying to cheat South American nations out of oil, invaded Iraq for it ("we're here to liberate the oil! People! People, not oil! Sorry!"), probably bathes in it like Cleopatra did in ass's milk *rolls eyes*

I guess he's saying to cut the reliance now because they're not getting any out of the Iraq thing.

Oh well, at least he's starting to make comments about looking for positive alternative energy sources.

Without major economic problems or huge domestic social problems I think it is very unlikely that a third party will really gain much of a following in America...

What kind of third party were you thinking of?

adele,
i think when bush was referring to not being reliant on foreign oil, he means that he wants to spend more time taking oil out of alaska and texas....and find MORE oil in places that are currently protected by titles like "national forest" and "only home for endangered animals".

i'm not advocating an extreme military political party. i'd say we might already have that.
but i'm saying this is the perfect opportunity for a third political party to emerge. one that does not have as many scandals and claims a middle ground policy, with tight political reforms.

Ohhh... I should have thought about the national forests and endangered animals being in the way of more oil! You'd think they'd almost situated themselves there over the oil to be inconvenient... tsk!
